Time moves forward not because direction is built into its moments—the fundamental laws run nearly the same both ways—but because the universe began in an extraordinarily low-entropy state, so disorder increases toward the future and drags every other asymmetry along with it.

The starting puzzle is that microphysics is almost time-symmetric: run the basic equations of motion backward and they remain valid, so nothing in the fundamental dynamics distinguishes past from future.

The obvious one-wayness of the world—eggs break but never unbreak, heat spreads but never spontaneously concentrates—therefore cannot come from the laws alone.

It comes from a boundary condition. The Second Law of thermodynamics says entropy (disorder, roughly the number of microscopic arrangements consistent with what we see) tends to increase, but statistically it could increase in either time direction from a given state.

The asymmetry is fixed by the fact that the early universe was in a state of remarkably low entropy—the "past hypothesis"—so from there, overwhelmingly, the only way to go is up.

That single cosmological fact orients the thermodynamic arrow toward the future.

The other arrows appear to be downstream of this one. We remember the past and not the future because reliable records require a low-entropy source, which lies in that direction.

Causation runs forward, and the felt "flow" of time tracks the same gradient.

So the layered answer: time's direction is not intrinsic but inherited, entropy is the master arrow, and it is anchored in the universe's initial order.

The practical residue is that irreversibility is real and total—no moment returns—which is precisely what gives choices and losses their weight. This would need revision only if a time-asymmetry were found in the fundamental laws themselves; the tiny known violations are not enough to ground the everyday arrow.

Why care, practically? Because the arrow is why nothing comes back. Every moment is spent once, every choice made once, every loss permanent—and that total irreversibility is exactly what gives your decisions their weight. If time ran both ways, nothing would matter, because everything could be undone. The one-directionness you sometimes resent—that you can't return, can't redo, can't unsay—is the same fact that makes a life a real story rather than an editable draft. The forward arrow isn't your enemy. It's the thing that makes anything count.
