what is an explanation?

An explanation answers "why" by locating a thing within a wider structure—its cause, mechanism, or a general pattern—so that it becomes expected rather than surprising and gives you traction to predict or intervene.

The core function is reducing brute surprise.

Before explanation, a fact just sits there, arbitrary ("it's raining"); a good explanation embeds it in something more general or more fundamental so that, given the wider structure, the fact is what you'd anticipate ("of course, given the cold front").

This is why explanation feels like the click of intelligibility: the isolated fact is connected to the web of what you already grasp.

Philosophers have modeled this several ways, each capturing part of it.

The causal account: to explain an event is to cite the cause or mechanism that produced it—the most robust form, because it tells you not just why the thing happened but how to change it.

The unification account: to explain is to show many disparate facts as instances of one pattern, so the world requires fewer independent brute assumptions.

Both aim at the same target—turning the surprising into the expected by showing what it depends on.

Two distinctions keep this honest. Explanation is more than description (which says what is the case) and more than prediction (which says only that it will happen); explanation says why, ideally in a way that also predicts and enables intervention.

And a genuine explanation must do work beyond relabeling: "why does it put you to sleep? a dormitive power" explains nothing, because it only renames the fact it was asked about—the tell of a pseudo-explanation is that it adds no new, testable content.

Finally, explanation bottoms out: every "why" invites another, so chains end in laws or brute facts we can describe but not further explain.

The practical test: does the account reduce your surprise, survive testing, and give you leverage to predict or intervene? This holds unless "why"-questions had answers independent of causes and patterns—inquiry finds none.

FLUID

An explanation tells you why something is the case by connecting it to its cause or to a more general pattern—turning "that's just how it is" into "of course, given X." The good ones do real work; the bad ones just rename the mystery and hand it back to you.

What a real explanation does:

  • Reduces surprise. A bare fact is arbitrary until you see what it follows from. "Why is the sky blue?" isn't answered by "it just is"—it's answered by something (light scattering) that makes blue the expected result.
  • Gives you traction. The best explanations—the causal ones—don't just satisfy curiosity; they tell you how to predict or intervene. If you know why the engine stalls, you know what to fix.

The tell for a fake explanation is that it only relabels the thing it was supposed to explain. "Why does the pill make you sleepy?" — "Because it has sleep-inducing power." That adds nothing; it's the question wearing a lab coat. Watch for this everywhere—a lot of confident-sounding "explanations" are just the mystery renamed in fancier words.

Two practical tests you can actually apply:

  • Does it reduce your surprise and let you do something new—predict a fresh case, or change the outcome? If not, it's probably description or relabeling, not explanation.
  • Does it bottom out honestly? Every "why" invites another, and real explanations eventually reach "that's a basic law" rather than pretending to explain forever. An account that claims to explain everything usually explains nothing.

So when someone explains something to you—or you explain it to yourself—ask: could I now predict or change this? If yes, you understand it. If it just feels labeled, you don't.

The Click of "Of Course."

There is a distinct sensation an explanation delivers—the click, the small collapse of tension when the surprising suddenly becomes the expected. A moment ago the fact stood there, arbitrary and mute; now it slots into place, of course, and you cannot quite recover how it ever seemed strange. This is what explanation does to a mind: it dissolves surprise, converts the brute givenness of a thing into the felt inevitability of "it had to be so." To explain is to take something that merely is and show it as something that makes sense—to move a fact from the pile of mysteries to the web of the understood.

Taming the Wild Fact.

An unexplained fact is a wild thing—it could be anything, connected to nothing, a loose stone in the mind. Explanation is domestication: it ties the fact to others, shows what it depends on and what depends on it, until it is no longer loose but woven into a fabric that holds. The lightning was terrifying when it was an angry god's whim and merely astonishing when it became electrostatic discharge—not because it grew less powerful, but because it grew connected, bound into a web of cause we could trace and even, eventually, catch in a wire. To explain the world is, slowly, to tame it—to turn a wilderness of brute happenings into a landscape with roads.

The Regress of Why.

Every explanation is a temporary resting place on an infinite staircase, because every answer invites the next "why." Why does the apple fall? Gravity. Why gravity? Curved spacetime. Why curved spacetime? —and here the child, wiser than we admit, keeps asking, and eventually we arrive at "that's just how it is," a brute fact we can describe but not explain. So explanation never reaches bottom; it only postpones the mystery, pushing it down a level, buying intelligibility on credit. The universe answers our "why" with another fact that provokes another "why," forever—and to explain is not to end the questioning but to move it somewhere deeper and more general, trading a small local mystery for a large fundamental one we agree to stop poking.

The Story That Has to Be True.

An explanation is, in the end, a story—a narrative of how one thing led to another, why this and not that. And this is its glory and its danger both. Its glory: a good causal story gives us the deepest thing a mind can have, the power to predict and to change, to reach into the chain and alter what comes next. Its danger: the human mind craves the story so badly that it will accept a false one over none, inventing gods, conspiracies, and dormitive powers to fill the ache of the unexplained. We are the animals that cannot bear a loose fact, and this hunger built our science and our superstitions from the same appetite. The discipline of explanation is learning to want the true story more than the satisfying one—to prefer an honest "we don't yet know" to a comforting tale that only renames the dark.
