Xerox PARC is the great cautionary parable of American technological invention: a corporate research laboratory that, in roughly a single decade, built the working prototype of nearly everything that would define personal computing for the next fifty years — the graphical desktop, the mouse-driven windowed interface, object-oriented programming, WYSIWYG text editing, Ethernet networking, the laser printer, the client-server model — and then watched almost all of it walk out the door to be commercialized by others, above all Apple.

It is a scenius defined by an extraordinary concentration of ARPA-trained talent given a blank institutional check and almost no product mandate, organized around Robert Taylor's conviction that the best way to build the future was to hand brilliant, argumentative people real hardware and let them build working systems for themselves, not papers about systems. Its tragedy — Xerox's famous failure to see what it had — is now as constitutive of its identity as its inventions.
