Oulipo — Ouvroir de littérature potentielle, “Workshop of Potential Literature” — was founded on 24 November 1960 in Paris when Raymond Queneau and the engineer-mathematician François Le Lionnais convened a small circle, initially under the umbrella of the pataphysically-inclined Collège de ’Pataphysique, to explore literature generated not from inspiration or chance but from explicit, often mathematical, constraints.
Their working self-description — rats who build the labyrinth from which they will try to escape — captures the paradox at the movement's core: freedom achieved through, not despite, self-imposed rule. Over six decades the group produced touchstone works (Perec's lipogrammatic La Disparition, 1969; Queneau's combinatorial Cent mille milliards de poèmes, 1961; Perec's structurally engineered La Vie mode d'emploi, 1978) while remaining a small, self-perpetuating, largely undissolved college — the longest-surviving movement in French literary history.
Queneau's Cent mille milliards de poèmes is ten sonnets printed on strips cut between every line, so any first line may join any second, any third — 1014 readable sonnets, more than a lifetime of reading. Below, a working miniature: four lines, each independently interchangeable. Turn them.
