01The Brief

No Wave was a brief, incendiary scene in downtown Manhattan around 1978–82 that took punk's negation to an absolute — 'no' to melody, to blues roots, to entertainment itself. In lofts and clubs, musicians (Lydia Lunch, James Chance, Glenn Branca, Arto Lindsay) made dissonant, atonal, confrontational sound, while filmmakers and artists blurred the lines between music, Super-8 film, and performance art. Captured on Brian Eno's No New York compilation, it was too extreme to last, but its refusal and its fusion of the art and music worlds rippled outward into noise rock, industrial, and the enduring downtown ideal of the artist who works across every medium at once.
