The Manifesto

Metabolism crystallized at the 1960 Tokyo World Design Conference, where a cohort of young architects and one critic — Kiyonori Kikutake, Kisho Kurokawa, Fumihiko Maki, Masato Otaka, and theorist Noboru Kawazoe — published ‘Metabolism 1960: Proposals for a New Urbanism’ under the informal patronage of Kenzo Tange, their teacher and the era’s most powerful architectural figure in Japan. The name came from shinchintaisha, the biological process of cellular renewal, and it supplied the movement’s governing conceit: buildings and even whole cities should be conceived as organisms, with permanent structural trunks (megastructures) bearing modular, replaceable capsules that could be added, removed, or regenerated as needs changed. This was less a style than a biological ideology for architecture, fusing Marxist theories of social transformation with organic metaphors of growth to answer a very concrete postwar problem: how to house and rebuild a devastated, rapidly urbanizing Japan at speed and at scale.
