The manifesto machine — Marinetti industrialized outrage, and shock spread the name faster than any artwork.

The prototype avant-garde: a manifesto machine worshipping speed, machines, and violence — and, fatally, war and fascism.
00 The Founding & Manifesto
Italian Futurism, launched by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's incendiary 1909 manifesto, was the prototype of the twentieth-century avant-garde and its manifesto machine. Worshipping speed, machines, youth, and violence, and demanding the destruction of museums and the past, the Futurists spread through painting (Boccioni, Balla), sculpture, typography, music, and theatrical "evenings" designed to provoke.
Their innovations in dynamic form and free-word typography were genuinely radical and rippled through Russian Futurism, Dada, and Constructivism. But Futurism also glorified war as "the world's only hygiene" and drifted into alliance with Italian Fascism, making it the movement that most starkly poses the question of the avant-garde's politics. Its aesthetic legacy is enormous; its political legacy, a permanent warning.

03 Memetic Forces · Why It Spread
The manifesto machine — Marinetti industrialized outrage, and shock spread the name faster than any artwork.
Worshipping youth, speed, and destruction thrilled a generation impatient with a museum-nation.
Total war on the past gave a program that anyone anywhere could enlist in.

05 Unifying Principle
The past must be destroyed — and the new century's dynamism, speed, the machine, violence, the crowd, exalted as the only source of beauty and life.

07 Internal Dynamics
A cell run as a permanent publicity campaign under Marinetti's impresario control; coherence came from the manifesto and the scandal, and its politics curdled toward the Fascist state.
08 Societal Impact
Invented the avant-garde manifesto as an art form and the template of shock-provocation; fathered Dada, Constructivism, and Vorticism — and stands as the warning of the vanguard's fascist temptation.
09 Scenius Signature
A movement that made the press release its masterpiece — proving an idea could out-travel any object.
10 Fate
Discredited by its fascist entanglement and Marinetti's death; its methods survive, laundered, in every subsequent avant-garde and ad campaign.
