1The Brief

1 · A tool to help people think together

Douglas Engelbart's Augmentation Research Center at Stanford Research Institute, active from about 1963 to 1977, pursued a single visionary goal: using computers to augment human intellect and help people solve the world's most complex, urgent problems together.

Against the era's assumption that computers were for automation, Engelbart and his team invented the tools of interactive computing — the mouse, hypertext, on-screen windows, and real-time collaborative editing — unveiled in the 1968 "Mother of All Demos," one of the most influential presentations in the history of technology.

Underfunded and ahead of its time, ARC dispersed, its people and ideas flowing into Xerox PARC and the personal-computer revolution. Engelbart's framing — technology as intellectual augmentation, not replacement — remains a lodestar.

3The Console

3 · The augmentation workstation

Engelbart's operator drove the oN-Line System with three limbs at once: the right hand on a wooden mouse tracking an on-screen bug; the left hand on a five-key chord keyset; and a standard keyboard between them. It was a human-machine instrument, not an appliance.
