A working joke,
taken half-seriously

Discordianism is less a religion than a working joke that its adherents insisted on taking half-seriously: a scripture-shaped celebration of Eris, goddess of chaos and strife, assembled by two Southern California teenagers, Greg Hill and Kerry Thornley, out of a shared vision in a bowling alley and a mimeograph machine.

Its foundational text, the Principia Discordia (1963, expanded 1970), is a collage of typewritten aphorisms, hand-drawn diagrams, clip art, and found ephemera that refuses to resolve whether it is scripture, satire, or philosophical tract — and treats that refusal as its central teaching.

Where most new religious movements sacralize order, purpose, or moral seriousness, Discordianism sacralizes disorder itself, proposing that both apparent order (the Aneristic Principle) and apparent disorder (the Eristic Principle) are projections of the human mind onto an underlying chaos that is neither. It thereby functions simultaneously as theology, epistemology critique, and prank.

The Sacred Chao

Believe everything,
believe nothing

Order and disorder are equally illusions imposed by mind; a self-aware joke-religion worshipping chaos is the sanest response to a mad world — believe everything, believe nothing.

The Aneristic Principle is the illusion of Order. The Eristic Principle is the illusion of Disorder. Both are projections onto a chaos that is neither. The Curse of Greyface was to forget the difference between the map and the territory — and to take the map for holy.
