01 DECLASSIFIED / THE BRIEF
Theory that runs hotter and stranger than the academy allows
The Cybernetic Culture Research Unit was a rogue theory-collective at the University of Warwick, roughly 1995–2003, that ran hotter and stranger than anything else in the academy. Gathered around Sadie Plant and the philosopher Nick Land, with Mark Fisher and Kodwo Eshun among its members, the CCRU fused cybernetics, Deleuze, jungle and techno, occultism, and science fiction into ‘theory-fiction’ and the concept of ‘hyperstition’ — fictions that make themselves real.
Operating collectively and pseudonymously, it produced a dense, self-mythologising body of work before burning out amid Land’s breakdown and drift rightward. Astonishingly influential for its size and brevity, the CCRU seeded accelerationism, hauntology, Afrofuturist theory, xenofeminism, and a whole online ‘weird theory’ culture.

Culture is a cybernetic system driven by feedback from the future; fictions can be engineered to bootstrap themselves into reality — hyperstition; theory should be produced like art, not scholarship.

The contagion vectors
A heady, forbidden intensity — part seminar, part rave, part occult order — that bonded a small group into a legend.
Theory-fiction was infinitely generative: you could always spin another mythos, and the ideas spread as memes precisely because they blurred true and invented.
Operating as a rogue unit against the academy gave it an outlaw glamour.
