The scene
The Bitcoin origin milieu was the cypherpunk mailing-list and forum world of 2008–2013 in which a pseudonymous figure, Satoshi Nakamoto, released a whitepaper and working software for a decentralized digital money — and a small band of early developers and enthusiasts turned it into a functioning system before Satoshi vanished.
Realizing a decades-old cypherpunk dream of money beyond state control, Bitcoin combined public-key cryptography, a peer-to-peer network, and a novel proof-of-work blockchain to solve digital cash without a trusted third party. Whatever one makes of its speculative afterlife, its origin scene is a striking case of theory made real by a tiny online community, and the direct ancestor of Ethereum, DAOs, and the whole crypto world.
