Negroponte's lab, exploring human–computer interaction and responsive environments — the direct forerunner of the Media Lab.
The Architecture Machine Group was Nicholas Negroponte's bet, made in 1967 with Leon Groisser at MIT, that the computer's proper role in design was not as a passive drafting instrument but as an active interlocutor — a machine that watched, learned from, and argued with the architect.
Working in FORTRAN on room-sized mainframes, funded by DARPA, AMG built a sequence of prototype "architecture machines" — URBAN5, HUNCH, the Spatial Data Management System, the Aspen Movie Map — that treated design as an iterative conversation between two intelligences, one carbon and one silicon.
In 1985 the group folded into the MIT Media Lab, its architectural focus dissolving into a broader mandate for "media," but its founding conviction — that machines could be responsive, adaptive design partners rather than tools — survived intact as the seed of the field now called human-computer interaction.
Computers should become responsive, adaptive partners in an intimate dialogue with people and their environments — architecture and computing merging into machines that understand and accommodate human needs.
Design, in the ArcMac frame, was never a monologue. It was a conversation — and the whole lab was built to give the machine a voice.
